OLOGUN-KUTERE A.D 1749

1. We are told that the King was a good king and reigned well over his people. He was proclaimed king of Lagos after the death of King Akinsemoyin about the year A.D. 1749. His reign was as peaceful and prosperous as was the reign of king Abiodun of Oyo, who was also his contemporary.

2. During this reign friendship was established between the Lagos people and the Ijebus. The Portuguese traders were introduced to the Ijebu and trade flourished.

3. The Ijebus were in the habit of bringing their produce to Lagos for sale, and foodstuffs became plentiful. The importance produce, palm oil, palm kernels flourished. These products were sold to the white traders in exchange for spirits, tobacco and various other articles.

4. During this reign, a quarrel arose between Lagos and Ido people, because Ido people refused to pay tributes to the king. A messenger was sent to Benin City to inform the King of the attitude taken by them. During the quarrel the Ido people were conquered and were forced to continue to pay tribute to the king of Lagos.

5. The King of Badagry views with great awe and respect the Kings of Lagos so much so that it was thought that Badagry was brought under Lagos by conquest, because the kings of Badagry would no do anything without first obtaining the consent of the Lagos king.

6. When the king of Lagos heard of the threatened invasion of Badagry by the Dahomeans, he sent presents to the king of Dahomey and begged him to spare the country for his sake, because the king of Badagry was his very good friend.

7. The following were the presents he sent viz- one hundred gloves, one hundred kegs of powder, one hundred pieces of cloths, one hundred cowries, one hundred demi-jons of run and one hundred rolls of tobacco.

8. When the King of Dahomey heard of the very valuable presents sent him by the King Ologun-Kutere, his wrath became quelled and he gave up fighting the badagrians and spared them.

9. This king was known as a kind-hearted man. He had many children who were like him in all things. He loved his chiefs very much. It was he who established the hereditary titles of the chiefs of Lagos.
