PHILOSOPHY OF NIGERIAN EDUCATION.

The five main national objectives of Nigeria as stated in the second national development plan, and endorsed as the necessary foundation for the national policy on education, are the building of:

  • A free and democratic society
  • A just and egalitarian society
  • A united, strong and self-reliant nation
  • A great and dynamic economy
  • A land of bright and full opportunities for all citizens.

Nigeria’s philosophy of education, therefore, is based on the integrating of the individual into a sound and effective citizen and equal educational opportunities for all citizens at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels, both inside the formal school system.

In consequence, the quality of instruction at all levels has to be oriented towards inculcating the following values:

  • Respect for the worth and dignity of the individuals:
  • Faith in man’s ability to make rational decisions.
  • Moral and spiritual values in inter-personal and human relations;
  • Shared responsibility for the common good of society;
  • Respect for the dignity of labour, and
  • Promotion of the emotional, physical and psychological health of all children.

For the philosophy to be in harmony with Nigeria’s national objectives, it has to be geared towards self-realization, better human relationship, individual and national efficiency, and effective citizenship national consciousness, national unity as well as toward social, cultural, economic, political, scientific and technological progress. The national educational aims and objectives to which the philosophy is linked are therefore:

  • The inculcation of national consciousness and national unity;
  • The inculcation of the right type of values and attitudes for the survival of the individual and Nigerian society.
  • The training of the mind in the understanding of the world round and
  • The acquisition of appropriate skills, abilities and competencies both mental and physical as equipment for the individual to live in and contribute to the development of the society.

Choosing Your School

Which is the best school?
The most commonly asked question, but impossible to answer! There is no one ‘best school’ able to provide the best possible education for every child. The private sector offers enormous variety, some schools cater for exceptionally able children, fast-moving and competitive environment in which able, ambitious and gregarious children will thrive, others specialize in ensuring a more homely, less demanding atmosphere. You will undoubtedly hear differing view about individual schools, but do remember that you are the best judge of your own child’s needs; the question to ask is ‘which one will suit my child best’?
