Lagos State governor, Babatunde Fashola met with the victim of the vicious assault carried out by naval officers escorting Rear Admiral Harry Arogundade, Miss Uzoma Okere, at his office in Lagos on Thursday.
During the meeting Fashola said that he had been deeply moved by the incident, which happened on Monday afternoon, and vowed to ensure that justice will be done.
Speaking to Uzoma directly when she visited his office Fashola said “Even though this is not an act of the Lagos State Government, I will first of all apologise to you. Those of us who exercise authority in the state who owe it as a responsibility to protect you, have actually turned against you. I am sorry
Referring to the groundswell of support from the citizen of Lagos for miss Uzoma’s plight he said that “This matter has been brought to my attention by emails and postings on the Internet regarding what took place. I can assure you that our democracy will protect you. You will get justice.
Fashola also promised that Lagos State would provide whatever legal support that Miss Uzoma may require stating “I have summoned the Solicitor General of the State and the Head of Office of the Public defender, they will go out with you. They will continue to advise you. Whatever legal assistance you will require, the state government will provide it for you.
Directing his comments at proponents of the belief that the wheels of justice turn too slowly to make a difference. Fashola concluded his remarks with “This one will be different, I don’t think that any act of provocation could have justified what I have seen..
